Many web designers work from home. Overheads are low, and the freedom of being at home has its benefits for a 'creative' lifestyle. It's not uncommon for a web designer to be almost nocturnal and work very unusual hours compared to the rest of the working world. This makes a 'web designer office' have its differences to many other professions.
Having the right working environment is important for everyone, if the comfort and productivity are going to balance. Some designers enjoy a 'messy' workspace, full of things that inspire their work and keep them in a space where they feel most at ease. Others struggle to concentrate when there are too many distractions. Quite often an empty desk apart from a mug and computer are the only way some people can achieve any work at all. It's too easy to allow several mugs and plates to archive themselves around a computer screen and quickly clutter, what was originally, a very tidy desk. This can only really be fixed with routine and good self discipline.
Quite often, the room itself can provide distractions, so the way the room is structured and decorated can play a key part in how productive the time spent in there can be. Just like a desk, a room can be more comfortable to some if it feels cluttered and yet completely distracting to others.
Long hours spent at a desk in front of a computer screen can lead to health issues. Choice of chair, computer, and room lighting are important factors to consider. Too much time spent on an uncomfortable chair can easily cause back problems and quickly become prevent any work from being achieved. Researching, and buying an appropriate chair can be beneficial to getting work done and taking care of your well being. Computers are a primary feature in a web designer job, and the choice of screen is something not to be taken lightly. Eye soreness is very common, often caused by excessive time at the computer, or sitting too close to the screen. Larger screens combined with good routine involving regular breaks away from the desk can help to prevent any long term health issues.
Perhaps one of them most over looked features of an office is lighting. Too much and it can easily make screens hard to see, too little and it could lead to eye strain, where the only light source is from a computer. The use of a good ceiling light or lamp can transform an office and making it feel much more comfortable. There is huge choice of lights available out there, so that lighting needn't be look out of place. A personal favourite would be using ceramic lamp bases on a desk to provide a comfortable amount of low level light.
